A new Starwars.com interview with photographer Annie Leibovitz has revealed the name of the character Andy Serkis will be bringing to life on screen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as an image of the actor on set in his motion-capture garb.

Serkis will be playing Supreme Leader Snoke. Not that it really means all that much, as we have no idea who Supreme Leader Snoke is or what he looks like.

He sure sounds like a bad guy, and from what we heard of Serkis in the original Force Awakens teaser, he certainly has knowledge of the force and its two sides. Might he be a new sith lord, one to replace the Emperor and Darth Vader? The new leader of the Empire?

Hard to say for certain. We know Kylo Ren is the name of the sith character glimpsed in the trailers so far. Could Snoke be his mentor? One clue might be in fact that Serkis is doing a motion-capture performance and won't be seen in the film as himself. This seems to imply Serkis will be a non-human of some kind, but he's used to that sort of thing:

We do get a glimpse of a character that looks like they could fit the bill of "Supreme Leader" in the second Force Awakens trailer, during the scene with an army of stormtroopers standing in front of a podium. Might Supreme Leader Snoke be about to speak?

It's all speculation at this point, but that's half the fun of getting excited for a new Star Wars film. It is a film almost completely wrapped in secrecy, and fans are working themselves up in a panic trying to unravel the mystery. It all helps create more hype for what will without question be the biggest movie of the year. Let's just hope we get a peak at what Supreme Leader Snoke looks like before the film's December 18, 2015 release.
