Mulder and Scully fans rejoiced earlier this year when Fox announced a limited new series based on its popular and long-running science fiction TV series The X-Files

However, new episodes of The X-Files won't air until January, 2016 and that's a really long time to wait even if the truth is out there. So how can fans of the series fill their time, other than re-watching The X-Files over and over on Netflix?

Never fear: we've got a list of the top five shows you can watch via online streaming now with full seasons available that are similar to The X-Files, both in tone and content. We've got everything from paranormal activity to government conspiracies to secret organizations that protect the world from evil things casual citizens will never know anything about.

Supernatural

At times, Supernatural almost feels like a paranormal rip-off of The X-Files, but it makes for some good TV watching. Following two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, as they make their way across the country defeating demons and creatures of the night, the series has been a hit since its first episode aired in 2005, and it's still going strong.

Of course, the two brothers often dress like FBI agents with aliases while researching cases: in the pilot episode, they even introduce themselves as Agents Mulder and Scully.

The good news is that nine seasons of the series are now available on Netflix. You can also get all 10 seasons on a paid Hulu subscription, as well as new episodes available the day after they air on The CW.

Fringe

Like The X-Files, Fringe is chock full of interesting characters and FBI conspiracies, although in this J.J. Abrams-helmed series, aliens don't take front and center. Instead, you get mad scientists, parallel universes and government cover-ups, but it's the sort of viewing that will definitely scratch many of your X-Files itches.

Also, John Noble's performance as Walter Bishop on the series is a must-not miss.

You can catch all five seasons of Fringe on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker

Although Kolchak: The Night Stalker only aired 20 episodes in 1974-75, it's often been credited as the main source of inspiration for The X-Files. In fact, the premise sounds familiar: the series follows a journalist, Carl Kolchak, who investigates unexplained crimes often caused by the supernatural and/or science fiction.

Kolchak: The Night Stalker is available exclusively on Netflix.

Warehouse 13

Imagine The X-Files with a goofier Mulder and a more serious Scully, and you've got the basic premise for Warehouse 13. The series follows a pair of super secret government agents, Myka Bering and Pete Lattimer, who travel the world in search of artifacts infused with supernatural powers.

All three seasons of Warehouse 13 are available on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Torchwood

We'd be remiss if we didn't mention Torchwood, the sort of more grown-up version of Doctor Who, except that Torchwood agents must track down aliens and keep them and their technology from destroying the world. So just like The X-Files, you've got aliens (although in Torchwood, they're more recognizable as such), government conspiracies (particularly in Torchwood: Children of Earth) and a secret organization in charge of it all.

All four seasons of Torchwood are now available on both Netflix and Hulu.
