Mother and child stories always tug at our heartstrings and it does not seem to matter what species they belong to for we all know that the loving bond between a mother and child is a precious gift.

The love of a baby koala for its injured mother has captured the hearts of many around the globe as he continued to cling to his mother to give her love and support as she battled for her life.

The Australian Zoo Wildlife Hospital in Queensland shared some heartwarming pictures of a six-month-old joey named Phantom clinging to his mother, Lizzy, as she recovered from emergency surgery.

Lizzy was hit by a car on a highway near the town of Coominya and suffered facial trauma and a collapsed lung. Since Phantom did not sustain any injuries during the incident, veterinarians deemed that separating the pair would cause undue stress for both the mother and child. So the little joey was allowed to remain with his mother during her emergency surgery and treatments to give her comfort and support.

The Australian Zoo's Facebook page posted the touching picture of Lizzy and Phantom with the caption: "Lizzy is now on antibiotics recovering well under the expert care of the vet team and is still getting some serious TLC from six-month-old Phantom, who is too young to leave her side. The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital has treated more than 58,000 native Australian wildlife patients to date, Phantom and Lizzy are just two who have been given a second chance."

Though it is still unclear how long it will take for Lizzy to recover, the remarkable staff working in the facility, such as veterinary nurse Jamie-Lynn Hevers, assures us that "Lizzy is recovering and we're happy to say she is doing well."

The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital in Beerwah receives about 100 wildlife emergency calls and admits up to 30 different species a day. Animals brought into the hospital are mostly injured in car accidents or in attacks by domesticated animals.
