Have you ever wondered why Spider-Man never drinks alcohol, smokes cigarettes or uses expletives? Spider-Man has to be good — he's bound by contract, according to a leaked document.

Spider-Man first appeared in the pages of Marvel Comics back in 1962. Since then, the superhero has become a well-known good-doer in the entertainment industry. Over the last few decades, Peter Parker – the man behind the costume – has gone on to appear not just in comics but in several movies and more than one TV series.

And as his uncle Ben told him, "with great power comes great responsibility" — Spider-Man has to take down the bad guys. But we've never seen Spider-Man behaving irresponsibly in other ways — no smoking, drinking or bad language for this superhero.

A recent Gawker report cites leaked Sony documents about the do's and don'ts of Spider-Man and Peter Parker.

Gawker has revealed that the leaked document is a licensing agreement between Marvel and Sony Pictures. The agreement specifies "Mandatory Spider-Man Character Traits."

Some of the listed traits state that Spider-Man:

  • Does not torture
  • Does not kill unless in defense of self or others
  • Does not use foul language beyond PG-13
  • Does not smoke tobacco
  • Does not sell/distribute illegal drugs
  • Does not abuse alcohol

These Spider-Man character traits have to be strictly followed by Peter Parker or any other person chosen to don the spidey-suit.

Along with other information, the document also provides some background details about Peter Parker:

  • He gains his powers while attending either middle school or college
  • He gains his powers from being bitten by a spider
  • His parents become absent from his life during his childhood
  • He is raised in a middle class household in Queens, New York

The leaked Spider-Man character guidelines mean you can definitely expect to see more action from the superhero — you just won't see him in the bar downing a couple of pints or stepping out to light a cigarette.
