Children of 1980s cartoons, brace yourselves. You're about to have the best day ever.

We've had Transformers games that took a pseudo-realistic approach — something closer in look and feel to the Michael Bay movies. But we've never had anything quite like this.

Platinum Games, probably best known for the Bayonetta games, has stepped up to the plate for its very first Transformers title. And rather than try to repeat what others did, Platinum drew on nostalgia for inspiration. Remember the 1980s Transformers cartoon? It culminated in the animated Transformers: The Movie, in which Optimus Prime was killed (only to be later resurrected on the TV show).

Transformers: Devastation is a third-person action game that features cell-shaded graphics that look very much like what you remember from that old TV show. And that's intentional. Platinum Games is bringing its usual fighting game dynamics to the Transformers universe, but the developer wanted gamers to feel like they were playing in the world of the original TV show.

This new trailer for the game shows all the slashing-and-shooting action, and demonstrates how well Platinum brought the old cartoon graphics into a 3D environment — with remarkably pleasing results. Sure, these Transformers aren't as detailed and complex as Michael Bay's, but that makes the visuals no less rich and beautiful.

In Transformers: Devastation, you'll play as either Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Sideswipe, Wheeljack or Grimlock. As in past games, you'll be able to transform between robot and vehicle modes on-the-fly, while you fight those dastardly Decepticons across huge environments. Fans of the cartoon will be happy to know that most of the voice actors from yesteryear are back for the game, including Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron.

No release date has been officially declared, but Transformers: Devastation is tentatively set for an arrival this fall. It's being made for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Windows PC.
