Asus is gearing up to launch the successor of its PadFone S dubbed the PadFone S2, which could hit the shelves by early 2016.

The news comes courtesy of @Leaksfly who posted the information on Weibo, a Chinese social media site. Leaksfly has divulged that Asus is on course to unveil the PadFone S2 in March 2016.

The smartphone will reportedly pack in a Snapdragon 820 chipset from Qualcomm. The PadFone S2 will also boast a 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels. The device will also tout 4GB of RAM and 32GB and 64GB of on-board storage. It is not clear if the smartphone will have an expandable memory option, but considering the previous iteration supported up to 64GB of memory, it is likely the PadFone S2 will also take the same route.

The smartphone's camera will also get a bump up compared to the PadFone S; the successor will boast a 20.7MP primary camera vis-à-vis the older iteration's 13MP one. Selfie lovers can also rejoice since leaks hint at an 8MP secondary camera, which betters the 2MP one on the PadFone S.

To power the smartphone, a 3,060 mAh battery will offer plenty of juice, which will also improve on the previous-gen smartphone's 2,300 mAH battery.

We presume that the device will likely come with Android M out of the box as that would be the latest OS at the time.

While much debate has been waged over the Snapdragon 820 chipset, which is expected to begin shipping in December, the Asus smartphone will likely pack in the same, since devices that will hit the shelves in Q1 2016 are expected to benefit from the latest processor from Qualcomm.

The first smartphone to tout Snapdragon 820, however, will likely be the Xiaomi Mi 5 Plus, say analysts.

@Leaksfly also disclosed that the PadFone S2's dock will have a 10-inch display, as well as a 5,100 mAh battery. However, the pricing and release of the same is not known.
