Fans of Ernest Cline's beloved dystopian sci-fi novel Ready Player One have something to look forward to: Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the book has finally been given a 2017 release date.

Plans for the Spielberg-helmed flick backed by Warner Bros. have been in the works since this past March, but the announcement of an official date was put on hold as the director wrapped up pre-production for another adaptation — Roald Dahl's canonical children's classic The BFG.

Published in 2012, Ready Player One centers around an actual Easter Egg hunt. Set in 2044, mankind indulges in virtual reality stimulation called OASIS to escape the harsh realities of their present world. Protagonist Wade Watts, an OASIS junkie, vies to embark on a more-or-less IRL Easter Egg hunt that OASIS maker James Halliday created in his VR universe. After becoming one of the only players in history to discover one of the three keys imperative to unlocking the egg, Watts sets off a course of events that changes the future of OASIS as it is known.

The script for Ready Player One was written by Zak Penn (X-Men: The Last Stand, X2) and Eric Eason (Manito, Journey to the End of the Night).
