Samsung is about to announce a follow up to its largest smartphone to date. The 7-inch Galaxy Mega 2 has just passed through the FCC and a press image of the phablet has leaked.

When Samsung introduced its Galaxy Note phablet in September 2011 at IFA, the smartphone / tablet hybrid was met with doubt from the tech community. Many called the device dead on arrival, claiming consumers would not want to carry or use a device with a huge 5.3-inch display. Samsung proved its skeptics wrong and consumers have purchased over 50 million of the converged smartphone and tablet device.

Samsung's Galaxy Note phablets are among its priciest smartphones but the company has offered consumers a 6.3-inch smartphone with mid-range specs and mid-range pricing with the Galaxy Mega 6.3, currently offered by AT&T and Sprint. It looks like Samsung is about to push the limits once again in terms of display size with the Galaxy Mega 2 (SM-T2558) and its 7-inch display.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 is listed by model number SM-T2558 in a recently discovered filing with the FCC, signaling an upcoming release in the U.S. It has been rumored to be heading to both AT&T and Sprint.

Just as news leaked of the Galaxy Mega 2's FCC filing hit the web, a press image and new details of the smartphone have also leaked. The Galaxy Mega 2 in the image is for a variant for China Mobile but gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect when the smartphone hits U.S. carriers.

The image shows the Galaxy Mega 2 will have a 7-inch 720p HD display with very narrow bezels. Its design is very reminiscent of the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3. The smartphone is believed to be using a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor and 1.5GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly. In terms of internal storage the tipster claims the device will ship with a paltry 8GB of memory and include a microSD expansion slot that will support up to 64GB microSD cards. Again, this is for the China Mobile variant, by the time it reaches U.S. carriers, 16GB should be expected. The phablet will also pack in an 8-megapixel rear camera and removable battery.

It's unclear when Samsung will make the Galaxy Mega 2 official but its June 12 press event could be a possibility, we'll keep you posted.
