As if flying wasn't scary enough for some travelers — what if a zombie outbreak suddenly occurred mid-flight?

Forget snakes on a plane. Flesh-eating walkers sound much more terrifying, and this is the exact scenario that will play out in a new stand-alone special for The Walking Dead.

AMC is currently planning a new half-hour untitled special with a storyline that takes place before its companion series, Fear the Walking Dead. It will tell the story of a group of passengers who come head-on with a group of walkers that attack an aircraft already in flight.

Little is known about the stand-alone zombies-on-a-plane special, except that one character who survives the attack will join the cast of Fear the Walking Dead in its second season.

The prequel special to Fear will debut online in chapters that will air between The Walking Dead's on-air telecast. That means fans of the show can catch what happens when people are stuck on a plane filled with flesh-eating walkers during commercial breaks of the show. It's currently unclear whether these chapters will span across one Walking Dead episode or a few.

AMC's Fear the Walking Dead set a record with 10.1 million people tuning in for its premiere episode — proving that zombie series are a serious hit among fans. AMC has previously aired online webisodes that provided short storylines surrounding characters like Hannah, as well as those about new groups of survivors.

We have recently seen a rising trend of creatures that attack mid-air in film and TV. This summer's Sharknado 3 brought sharks to space, whereas Samuel L. Jackson famously fought back slithering monsters in Snakes on a Plane.

Just like the aircraft in Snakes on a Plane, we can assume that the plane in the AMC special will be heading to Los Angeles, which is the setting for Fear the Walking Dead.

While having a zombie outbreak mid-flight sounds horrifyingly creative, it's not an original idea. Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak on a Plane followed this very same concept. However, this is the first time AMC will use a new character from a webisode to be featured in its series.
