There's a new Nest thermostat in town, and it's the biggest one yet.

The company announced the release of the 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat Tuesday, and it's got a new high-resolution screen that's 40 percent larger than the second-generation model. The larger screen has a resolution of 229 pixels, which is also 25 percent more than what Nest's last smart thermostat release had.

The third-generation Nest thermostat comes with a new software feature called Farsight, which enables it to automatically turn on and display the target temperature or time when it detects movement in the room. The new device also comes with a diagnostics feature called Furnace Heads-Up, which alerts users to potential problems with their heating system through messages in the Nest app and on the thermostat screen twice per year, in addition to a monthly notice in the Home Report. Furnace Heads-Up will also become available to first- and second-generation Nest owners later this year.

Nest's new thermostat will also integrate with Nest Protect and Nest Cam just as first- and second-generation Nest thermostats do, providing emergency notifications when it detects smoke or carbon monoxide, helping the thermostat better understand when you're home and when you're away, and the ability to automatically record when the Nest thermostat is put in Home or Away mode.

The 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat has a retail price of $249 and is available now through Nest.com, Amazon and BestBuy.com. It will also be available in Best Buy stores, Google Store, Lowe's, The Home Depot, Sam's Club, Target and Verizon Wireless in the future.
