Millions of iOS and Android devices users – particularly Pokemon fanatics – across the globe will soon enjoy a new puzzle game. Pokemon Shuffle – originally set to be released later this year – has been unveiled, making it the very first Pokemon game to be launched on smartphones and tablets outside of Japan.

This Match-3 puzzle game – which has gained popularity with Nintendo 3DS users since February – was created by The Pokemon Company. Even though it is free to download via the App Store and Google Play Store, the game comes with in-app purchases.

"There is a limit to how many stages you can play through without taking a break. This number will naturally be replenished with time, but you can also purchase items within the game's shop that will allow you to continue playing immediately," reads the product description on the Pokemon website.

What's interesting about this new application is that it enables players to battle and gather, as well as level up Pokemon.

In this game, players will have to line up three or more Pokemon horizontally or vertically to fight against wild Pokemon. In order to level up, the player will have to make use of the so-called Mega-Evolved Pokemon.

The game also permits players to look at the progress of their friends through Facebook. Players can help their friends advance by sending them mini Hearts.

Players must have devices running Android 4.1 and up to play the game. Those who have the following devices cannot play the game, as listed on the Google Play page of Pokemon Shuffle: MediaPad Youth, MEDIAS W, Yota Phone 2, Digno T and Asus Fonepad Note 6.

Meanwhile, developers say the game should work flawlessly on all iOS devices running iOS 7 or later. Available features may be dependent, though, on the iOS version of the device.

"One of my favourite games of all time," Android user Hunter777 posted on the game's Google Play page, giving it a five-star rating. "I see people complaining about the hearts, but I've been playing this game since February and I know for a fact that the wait is worth it. I don't have a single complaint about this game. I love it."

This is not the first Pokemon game to land on mobile devices. The Pokemon Trading Card Game, launched last year, and is still available for download.
