Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 flagship processor will not feature in smartphones until early 2016, but the SoC has already achieved a massive AnTuTu score of 83,774.

The chipmaker has been releasing some information about its Snapdragon 820 processor from time to time. In late August, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon Smart Protect for the SoC, a breakthrough mobile anti-malware technology.

"The upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is the first platform offering Snapdragon Smart Protect, providing real-time, on-device machine learning designed to support accurate and effective detection of zero-day malware threats for improved personal privacy and device security," said Qualcomm.

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the company revealed in a blog post that the upcoming Snapdragon 820 will feature the company's own 64-bit ARM based Kyro CPUs. The chipmaker also claimed that the Snapdragon 820 processor will offer double the performance as well as power efficiency in comparison to the Snapdragon 810 processor.

"The 820 is engineered with custom-built, highly optimized cores designed for heterogeneous computing—the ability to combine different functional cores of the SoC, such as the CPU, GPU and DSP cores, to achieve previously unattainable performance and power savings, rather than using the same core for different tasks," stated Qualcomm.

Meanwhile, a handset called Green Orange X1 Pro running on the Snapdragon 820 achieved an AnTuTu score of 83,774. The device's display had a 1,920 x 1,080 pixel resolution instead of the 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution, which is found in many top-end smartphones. The size of the screen is not known.

The device testing the new Snapdragon processor was equipped with a 16MP primary camera and had 4GB of RAM. The handset was running on Android 4.4.2 Jelly Bean and had 64GB of on-board storage.

There are limited numbers of handsets running on Snapdragon 810, and many customers have complained of overheating issues in devices running on the chip. Qualcomm will have to ensure that its upcoming Snapdragon 810 processor offers power efficiency and performance and, at the same time, does not overheat the handsets.

None of the smartphone makers have announced using the Snapdragon 820 in their handsets. However, some rumors suggest that the Xiaomi Mi 5 will be the first mobile device that will come running on Qualcomm's upcoming processor. The Xiaomi phone is expected to hit shelves in March 2016.
