The first season of Gotham was a wild ride of introductions, criminal dealings, backstabbings, shocking reversals and the early revelations of many characters' true natures. It's hard to believe so many dramatic twists and turns could occur in this city, so many years before Batman's arrival.

You've got Jim Gordon, the seemingly one pure-hearted cop in the entire city, and his jaded, double-dealing partner Harvey Bullock. There's Oswald Cobblepot, the Penguin in-the-making, who brilliantly climbs the ranks of Gotham's underworld, manipulating his way to the top. There's Edward Nygma, the oddball forensics expert who has an obsession with riddles; his story unfolded a bit slower than others' in Season 1, but he took a dramatic turn before the end.

There's young Bruce Wayne — eager to get his head around the criminal empires that run the city so he can learn how to one day bring them down. His caretaker and butler, Alfred Pennyworth, has just the right mix of tough-as-nails and tenderness. And Selina Kyle, the tween cat burglar who takes an interest in Bruce and the murder of his parents.

A long parade of major characters joined in along the way, including Batman villains who haven't gone bad or taken on their bad-guy identities. These include district attorney Harvey Dent (Two-Face), abused youngster Ivy Pepper (Poison Ivy), Victor Zsasz, Richard Sionis (Black Mask), Tommy Elliot (Hush), Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow), Francis Dulmacher (Dollmaker) and Jerome Valeska, who is probably the Joker in-the-making.

If you missed all of those twists and turns and character introductions, Fox has assembled a seven-minute recap video that will help you catch up on all of the major story beats in a short period of time.

Gotham returns for its second season on Monday, September 21 on Fox.
