Two promos for the ninth series – or, for American aficionados, "season" – of Doctor Who has been released a little less than two weeks before its return to BBC One. A list of episode titles has also been revealed — including one that might allude to the demise of the Doctor's most recent companion, Clara "The Girl Who Lived" Oswald (played by Jenna Coleman).

The first promo, a typical teaser trailer, begets a response to a time-honored, Time Lordian question: "Where is the Doctor?" The second is a behind-the-scenes interview with Coleman, showrunner Steven Moffat and Peter Capaldi (who has played the latest iteration of the Doctor since 2013).

The second promo drops a few little mini-spoilers, such as the return of Missy (aka the Mistress, played by Michelle Gomez), the first female regeneration of the Doctor's nemesis, the Master, and the introduction of a new character, played by Game of Thrones veteran Maisie Williams.

"The overarching theme, I suppose, of this series is that we see Clara and the Doctor running through time and space as fast as they can," said Coleman.

Moffat also had something to add regarding the upcoming season of the beloved show, especially in terms of tone.

"We're changing up things, we're not leaving it the same as it was last year," he stated, "We're doing kind of bigger stories. We're doing more cliffhangers, we're doing two-parters. Last year, maybe [viewers] felt slightly discomfited by [the show]; this year, [they'll] be grinning more."

As for Clara's possible demise? While nothing can be said for certain, at this juncture, the fifth episode of the season is titled "The Girl Who Died" – a nod to Clara's Doctor-bestowed nickname, "The Girl Who Lived" – the same one that will also guest star Williams. But then again, episode six is called "The Woman Who Lived," so the rest is still a mystery.

BBC One's ninth series of Doctor Who is set to premiere on September 19.
