As drones become used more widely in areas like war zones, it is becoming increasingly important to look at things like drone defense.

A U.K. company called Selex ES has unveiled a rather sophisticated drone defense system called the Falcon Shield, which offers protection from both mini- and microsized unmanned aerial vehicles.

Selex ES didn't offer too many details about how the anti-drone system works other than the fact that it uses the electromagnetic spectrum to essentially create a shield around the area that is being protected. The system also uses a series of cameras and radar surveillance sensors that are able to detect when a drone enters the protected area.

Of course, detection is only one part of the drone defense equation, with the other being taking it down. The system includes a jamming technology that allows the user to disrupt the drone. This jamming technology can even allow the user to hijack the drone and control it in a different area.

The Falcon Shield is one of a number of drone defense systems currently under development. Boeing, for example, also recently unveiled a laser cannon that can shoot a drone out of the sky in a matter of a few seconds. The cannon uses a camera that is designed to be able to track the drone, after which it is burned with a laser, sending it to the ground. The laser is able to target a specific part of the drone, keeping the rest intact if that is what the shooter wants. While currently the cannon has only been developed in a static version, Boeing hopes to develop one that can move around.
