I've long been a fan of Martian's elegant solution to the smartwatch problem. The company's devices are essentially dumb analog watches retrofitted to bring them in line with other 21st century offerings.

The wearables have built-in wireless connectivity and a small display built directly into the face, offering up quick notifications from services like Facebook and Twitter (along with a haptic buzz) and then just defaulting to their regular old dumb watch selves the rest of the time.

In fact, I just picked up the Martian Notifier from Amazon. I'm regretting the decision a bit, as the company just upgraded the line in the form of the Martian Voice Command. For starters, the devices just look better - there's a sport and luxury edition that are decidedly less plasticky than their predecessor.

And then there's the added functionality the name implies - built-in speakers and microphones that allow for voice commands. Users can also have conversations through the watch, Dick Tracy style, so long as its connected to a mobile device. The company's managed to maintain the integrity of the product with a barely visible speaker grille built-in into the side bezel.

The one downside? While they're not particularly pricey by smartwatch standards, they'll run certainly run you a fair bit more than the Notifier, with a starting price of $249.
