Recently, Motorola released a full list of its devices that are getting the long-awaited Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. The carrier versions of the Motorola second-gen Moto X 2014 were believed to be excluded from the lineup, but new Wi-Fi certifications suggest otherwise.

In Motorola's official statement, only select phones are intended to run the Marshmallow OS. Motorola's Vice President of Software Product Management, Björn Kilburn says that only the following devices will get the latest Android version: the 2015 Moto X Pure Edition (3rd gen), 2015 Moto X Style (3rd gen), 2015 Moto X Play, 2015 Moto G (3rd gen), 2014 Moto X Pure Edition in the US (2nd gen), 2014 Moto X in Latin America, Europe and Asia2 (2nd gen), 2014 Moto G and Moto G with 4G LTE2 (2nd gen), DROID Turbo, 2014 Moto MAXX, 2014 Moto Turbo and Nexus 6.

Motorola's forums manager Matt even made it clear that the carrier variants of the second-generation Moto X 2014 won't be getting the Marshmallow update.

"The carrier versions—AT&T and Verizon—will not get the upgrade," he posted on the Motorola forum.

Users of the carrier variants were dismayed upon reading the list and Matt's statement, and some of them even thought that it was simply a mistake when their devices didn't turn up on the list. But when the Motorola second-gen Moto X 2014 got updated with all new certifications, fans of the handset found out that it was labeled with "Operating System: Android, version:6." This led them to speculate that the Marshmallow update won't be limited to the Pure Edition XT 1095, as Verizon XT1096 and AT&T XT1097 were also under the updated certifications.

Despite what Matt said and Motorola's official list, it seems that the XT1096 and XT1097 will get to join the Marshmallow ranks after all, based on the new certifications. However, the Android device maker is yet to mention anything about it, so it might be too early to get our hopes up. However, Kilburn did say that "things may change," so what he was referring to may include this matter.
