The little backpacking Latina adventurer Dora will soon have her very own live action movie. Paramount Pictures has announced that Tom Wheeler, who also penned “Puss And Boots,” has been brought on to write the screenplay for the big screen adaptation of “Dora The Explorer” as well as another popular cartoon and toyline, Micronauts.

Dora is currently in development and no director is eyed for the project just yet. The little explorer first captured the hearts of children in 2000 when the first episode aired on Nickelodeon. The educational series was hailed as one of the first to feature a Latina main character and to teach Spanish to a mainstream audience. It was nominated for numerous awards and won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2011.

Although its run officially ended this year after 170 episodes, it has spawned spinoff series like "Go Diego Go!" and "Dora and Friends: Into the City"

According to reports, the Dora live action feature film is being produced in hopes of starting a new franchise for the series and brand.

Mary Parent has been named by Paramaount Pictures as well and one of the producers on board for the film. Her other credits include "The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water," "Pacific Rim" and "The Revenant."

Back in 2012, College Humor posted a parody trailer of a live-action "Dora The Explorer Movie" starring Ariel Winter. The more grown-up version of Dora still wore her trademark purple shirt and shorts, and trusty monkey sidekick Boots. The parody took on a more action and Indiana Jones feel to it and became extremely popular with fans of the show who had grown up, and even parents of the bilingual animation who had to watch it with their kids.

The College Humor trailer was followed up in 2013 with a web mini-series entitled “Dora and The Destiny Medallion.”

Although the Paramount Pictures Dora movie will likely not take such an adult approach to the movie adaptation of the series, it still shows what a potential adventure, exploration show could have especially with a fearless young latina girl in the lead.
