Although the star of the 2011 film, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” Rooney Mara had already given up hope that the sequel to the critically acclaimed Hollywood adaptation of Steig Larsson's “Millenium” series would ever be made, Sony has announced that a sequel is finally pushing through. But surprisingly, none of the original cast will be returning, nor will the original director.

According to reports, instead of picking up with “The Girl Who Played With Fire” or “The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest,” the next movie will be adapted from the fourth novel in the series, “The Girl In The Spider's Web.”

This novel was not penned by Larsson and instead was written by Swedish writer, David Lagercrantz, after the Larsson estate commissioned him to make a sequel to the popular trilogy about super-hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Controversially, the book was not written using any of the notes that Larsson left on his laptop which is in the possession of his common law partner, Eva Gabrielsson. Larsson had originally planned at least ten novels, but was only able to publish three of them before his death. However, he kept extensive notes and drafts in his laptop which has been the center of a legal battle ever since

Larsson's family and his girlfriend have been enveloped in legal disputes ever since the author's untimely death. Reportedly, Larsson and Gabrielsson never legally married and because Larsson did not leave a will for his estate, everything he had, including the rights to the “Millennium” series, went to his brother.

Even so, critics hailed “The Girl In The Spider's Web” as a respectful homage to Larsson's work which keeps the character of Salander intact and fits well into the narrative.

As Sony pushes forward to adapting the new novel into a reboot of the franchise, “Ex Machina” actress Alicia Vikander is rumored to be considered to take over the part of the edgy Lisbeth Salander.

If Vikander wins the role, she will be the third actress to portray Salander. The “Millenium” trilogy was first adapted into a six-part TV mini series in Sweden starring Noomi Rapace.

Mara took up the role in the 2011 American version of the film starring with Daniel Craig as the crime journalist, Mikael Blomkvist, who is reportedly not reprising his role in order to keep production costs lower than the first film.
