At the end of 2014, Mercedes-Benz announced that it was modifying its naming strategy. At the time, the automaker introduced the mid-sized M-Class as a GLE.

After a series of leaks, the car manufacturer revealed the 2017 GL-Class model also gets renamed into GLS. It is customary for crossovers to mirror the inspiration and connection with passenger autos. For example, the GLA mirrors the A class, the GLC the medium sized C class, and it makes sense that the SUV model of Mercedes-Benz mirrors the carmaker's flagship, the S class.

When working on the new GLS, the company focused on providing a mix of high efficiency, flexibility and increased dynamics. 4Matic all-wheel drive is a default, but fans of the crossover line will find that the nine-speed 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is also installed.

Alongside the various sensors and electronic assisted driving tools, the GLS has a Dynamic Select vehicle dynamics system and Airmatic air suspension mechanism.

Even if the GL series was already a powerhouse, engineers further boosted performance by tweaking the engine. The GLS350d model sports an engine that is sturdy and powerful. The 3.0-liter V-6 diesel generates 255hp, at 455 pound-feet of torque.

The GLS450 variant offers more kick by using a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 capable of producing 362hp, at 369 pound-feet. The third in line is the GLS550, where the jump in scope is obvious: a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 laughs its way over highways at 449hp and 516 pound-feet. At the top of the power chain, the GLS63 model sits majestically. It comes with a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 that offers "just" 577hp and 561 pound-feet.

The exterior design of the new Mercedes lineup keeps true to the classy, elegant lines. Some upgrades are visible in the fierce grille, bumpers and bullet-shaped headlights. For buyers who enjoy a high-end vehicle and an aggressive touch, the company offers an appropriate exterior kit. Buyers can opt for bumpers with bigger air intakes, 21-inch alloy rims, more prominent side sills as well as accessorized side flaps.

The cabin is posh and stylish, as it is fit for the "S-Class among SUVs."

Three rows of seats accommodate seven lavish seats. Even if the overall design of the dashboard remains the same, some improvements are visible. Drivers get help from the new touchpad-based interface, the innovative instrument cluster and upgraded multifunction steering wheel.

Embedded in the general functionality of the vehicle there are a couple of driving aids, such as Lane Keep Assist, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Brake Assist, Attention Assist. Steering Assist is there too, coupled with the Distronic Plus cruise control. The driving safety is ensured by means of cross traffic and blind spot warning systems.

No price tag information is available at the moment, but the German automaker is accepting preorders and promises to start delivering GLS models by March 2016. In the meantime, check out the trailer below to see the new Mercedes GLS SUV in action.
