Cyclists and bike trail enthusiasts can now be enthused by a new Maps update from Google for its Android phones and other devices.

The new Maps update will provide some cool new features for bicycle riders. Users will be able to access some key pieces of information about intended or possible routes.

According to reports, the new features also include information about elevation. Cyclists seeking information about a particular elevation will now be able to compare alternate routes with different elevation data from the comfort of their bicycle before they choose a path. The service will also reportedly allow users to assess a timeline based on the data Google provides as well. The update brings the maps version for Android to 8.2.

It was also reported that similar changes were added to the web-based service as well in May. Google's search function will display the route informaiton complete with an elevation chart and estimated time it takes.

The new Map features are available in 14 countries worldwide. Those countries include Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Another report details the new voice features included with the new update. In its navigation mode, bike riders will be able to conversationally input voice commands or pose questions to the software such as "how long will it take to reach my destination," or "where's the next turn?" As always with voice activated software, the phrasing has to be particular in order for the feature to work as intended.

Another reported feature of the service is a slide-out menu for Your Places in your Google account. There are also other features in the maps software like a new voice icon replacing the little humanoid figure icon in the search bar that previously loaded Places. There is also a new Uber card displayed in the car tab along with public transportation and walking information.

The features are expected to be a great help to cyclists and an exciting novelty for cycling enthusiasts. The update to 8.2 should come automatically for Android users, however a source notes that the APK can also be downloaded and installed for those that don't have the patience to wait around. The source advises having "unknown sources" enabled in security settings for Android devices.
