Pokkén Tournament is about to land on the Nintendo Wii U in the coming year. Reports have surfaced saying that this Pokémon arcade fighting game will arrive bringing its own special Wii U controller.

What's Notable With The Pokkén Tournament Controller

The Pokkén controller does not come packed with any analog sticks. Instead, it boasts four action buttons and a directional pad. The “ZL” and “ZR” buttons are now on the controller’s face (these are usually placed on the gamepad’s back side, as triggers). These two buttons are located beside the Select and Start buttons. In addition, the controller is wired, implying that it is not going to require a charger or batteries to operate.

Pokémon fan site Serebii says that the special Wii U controller emulates the controller of the arcade version of the video game.

It is worth noting, though, that at the moment, this special controller is being released exclusively in Japan. The good news, nevertheless, is that Pokkén Tournament is slated to land in the United States sometime in the coming year. As such, it is safe to believe that the controller is going to land alongside the hotly awaited video game.

Release Date

Pokkén Tournament, along with the special controller, launches on March 18 in Japan, based on a trailer posted recently. The Wii U console bundle, where the game and the special controller will be included, will be priced at ¥36,000 or around $293.

Does The Game Also Work With Other Controllers?

Pokkén Tournament also works with the Classic Controller Pro and Wii U Pro Controller.

"Pokkén Tournament was developed with BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment, Inc., the producers of one of the top achievements in fighting games, the Tekken series," according to the game's description. "True to its legacy, this game brings tight gameplay and incredible control to never-before-seen battles between Pokémon."

The Pokemon Company touts that the game was developed to be enjoyed by a wide array of people, even those who have never tried playing an action or fighting game before.

What's Next For Nintendo

We earlier reported that a Nintendo patent was leaked, showcasing a possible NX controller named Nintendo NX. The patent was initially uncovered by a NeoGAF user and later verified by Destructoid as the actual patent was filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

However, the abstract of the purported Nintendo NX seems unclear.

“A non-limiting example information processing apparatus comprises a housing, and a first portion of the housing is formed in an elliptical form when viewing from the front,” reads a part of the patent.

Basically, this controller rocks a big flat display along with a "touch panel" which has “operation sticks” attached.

Below is the trailer of Pokkén Tournament for a glimpse of what's in store for the game's fans when it arrives next year.
