From the first episode of this season through recent episodes, fans of The CW's Arrow knew a major death was on its way.

Previous episodes have shown Oliver Queen standing in front of a grave many times, suggesting that someone close to him is about to die.

There was a surprise death in the most recent episode, but for those expecting it from a major character, it probably proved disappointing.

Please note that the following contains spoilers from Wednesday night's episode of Arrow.

So who is Oliver grieving over in all those episodes this season? It seems that it's possibly Amanda Waller, the head of A.R.G.U.S. And if you're asking, "Who's that?", you probably missed the few episodes she's appeared in during previous seasons of the show.

While not a main character, Waller has played a somewhat important part on the series. She helped put together the Suicide Squad to help Team Arrow when they needed it, although she often got in their way when her organization's goals didn't align with Oliver and company.

In the Jan. 27 episode, though, Waller took a bullet in the head at point-blank range. Although characters have a way of returning from the dead on the series, it's likely that this is the last we'll see of her on television. Rumors state that DC wants all focus on some of these television characters turned toward their upcoming movies: Waller plays a major part in the film version of Suicide Squad.

But is Waller the person that Oliver grieves over in previous episodes? We've also seen Barry Allen, aka The Flash, at the mysterious grave. The series already teased that the dead body belonged to Felicity, particularly after she got caught in the crossfire of a shoot-out with Damien Darhk, but as revealed last week, Felicity survived that encounter, although she's now bound to a wheelchair. Do Oliver and Barry care so much about such a minor character as Waller?

If the grave does belong to Waller, it's certainly a let down from the anticipation built during those intense scenes of Oliver visiting that grave. But Waller's death is probably a red herring being thrown at viewers to keep them guessing.

Arrow airs Wednesdays on The CW.
