Master Yoda is possibly the second most famous "Star Wars" character after Darth Vader, and fans were this close to seeing the green revered master in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Maryann Brandon and Mary Jo Markey, two of the film's editors, talked to Entertainment Tonight (ET) about "Star Wars: Episode VII" and admitted that Yoda was almost part of it.

In "The Force Awakens," main protagonist Rey (Daisy Ridley) has Force visions where she hears the voices of veteran Jedi masters. The editors pondered whether or not to step into cameo territory by making Yoda appear on the big screen, alongside the voices of Ewan McGregor, Alec Guinness and Frank Oz.

"There was one point where we were actually thinking of having Yoda in the film, and then we decided not to," Brandon told ET during the ACE Eddie Awards.

Brandon added that Yoda's puppeteer and voice actor, Franz Oz, was in the studio for a day and was excited to do "a whole bunch of Yoda." Needless to say, all the cast members were happy to see the veteran return to work once more, but the visual presence of the green venerable Jedi Master did not make it into the final cut.

In January 2016, ET talked to director Colin Trevorrow, who will take the reins for "Star Wars: Episode IX." Trevorrow's take on the new "Star Wars" trilogy was optimistic, and he expects to see an increased number of fans fill the theaters.

As early as "Episode VII" ended, speculation started roaming about the lineage of Rey. Some claim that she might be Rey Skywalker, daughter of Luke (Mark Hamill). Others consider it more likely that she is Obi-Wan Kenobi's granddaughter.

Trevorrow promises that the following movies of the franchise will offer a clear answer.

"We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying," he says. "We'll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we're just telling you what happened."

He went on to underline the importance of Rey's character by saying that her destiny impacts more than just "The Force Awakens," as she is an important character in the sci-fi universe.

One thing that the director of "Episode IX" did not mention was if fans will get to see Yoda in any of the upcoming "Star Wars" movies.
