The World of Warcraft: Legion expansion will be released on Aug. 30. Customers who pre-purchase their copy of the expansion pack will get a character boost to level 100.

World of Warcraft is an online role-playing video game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, which was released in late 2004.

Blizzard Entertainment announced the expansion set -- Legion -- during Gamescon 2015 and confirmed its release date on Monday.

"Legion opens a dark and thrilling new chapter in one of the Warcraft series' greatest conflicts, and things will never be the same for some of Azeroth's most iconic heroes and villains," said Mike Morhaime, the cofounder and CEO of Blizzard Entertainment.

Morhaime suggests that the upcoming expansion is full with content and features, which will give players new ways to customize their heroes and explore the dark world.

Gamers who want to buy the expansion set (digital or physical copy) will have to pay $49.99 for the Standard Edition and $69.99 for the Digital Deluxe Edition, which includes several bonuses such as Illidari Felstalker mount and pet for World of Warcraft and more. Blizzard confirmed that the expansion will be available at retailers and the company's digital shop.

Customers who pre-purchase any of the expansion set will also unlock an instant level-100 character and will get early access to the new Demon Hunter hero class before the release of the expansion.

Legion brings new content such as a new continent called The Broken Isles, fresh raids and dungeons, and customizable artifact weapons. The expansion also revamps the PvP progression system.

Blizzard Entertainment also announced that it will also release a Collector's Edition of the expansion set for $89.99 that will be available only at retailers. The set will contain a hardcover art book, CD soundtrack, a Legion mousepad and behind-the-scenes two-disc Blu-ray/DVD set. This expansion set will also include all the items offered in the Digital Deluxe edition.

Legion will be the sixth expansion set released by Blizzard. The first expansion set called The Burning Crusade was released in 2007 followed by Wrath of the Lich King in 2008. In 2010, Blizzard Entertainment released the third expansion set called Cataclysm and then Mists of Pandaria in 2012. The fifth expansion -- Warlords of Draenor -- was released in 2014.

The subscriber base of World of Warcraft has witnessed a decline. In the past, the release of a new expansion set has attracted more gamers. Blizzard Entertainment will hope that the release of Legion will get more gamers on board.
