Honda announced that its upcoming Clarity Fuel Cell, which is scheduled to launch in late 2016, will be joined by two more models with the launch set in 2017.

The Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-In Hybrid vehicles will be based on the same platform underpinnings found in the new Clarity Fuel Cell.

With the expanded Clarity lineup of vehicles, customers now have more ways to satisfy their unique tastes and driving demands while taking advantage of all the relevant features found in one single platform.

"The Honda Clarity Series will provide customers with a well-equipped, premium, midsize vehicle with range of ultra low-carbon powertrain options to suit their lifestyle needs," said John Mendel, executive VP, Automobile Division at American Honda Motor Co.

Honda has been testing the Clarity fuel cell for many years now, which was made possible by offering leasing options that involve 40 vehicles to its customers in California. It expects that the new Fuel Cell version will gain a driving range rating that exceeds the 300 miles set by the U.S EPA as well a refueling time that should last around three to five minutes.

"The Clarity Fuel Cell has a targeted range of more than 300 miles, in part made possible by its ultra-aerodynamic body and advanced powertrain," said Honda.

Design-wise, the Clarity Fuel Cell boasts a streamlined shape for easy managing of airflow, as well as a more compact fuel cell and integrated powertrain that seats up to five passengers.

"The entire powertrain is more compact and now located under the hood, allowing for an airy, comfortable passenger compartment that seats five."

The Clarity Electric is a midsize five-passenger battery electric vehicle that is the first to offer consumers premium features at a price that is absolutely affordable.

The Clarity Plug-In Hybrid will be the volume leader in the Clarity series of vehicles. It is built to seamlessly combine a full-electric driving range that is in excess of 40 miles under the hyper-efficient gasoline-hybrid extended range mode.

Honda is yet to unveil the design features of the Clarity Electric and Clarity Plug-In Hybrid vehicles on its site. Meanwhile, the Clarity Fuel Cell is already available in Japan with a U.S. launch set at the later part of 2016.
