Miitomo, a free social networking mobile app developed by Nintendo for Android and iOS devices, initially launched in Japan on March 17 and rolled out globally on March 31.

It was well-received by fans, attracting more than a million users within three days of launch. Within four days of its global launch, Miitomo has been downloaded over 3 million times and garnered more than 1.6 million downloads in the United States alone, beating Snapchat for the No. 1 spot in the App store.

The light social platform allows users to interact with other users with Nintendo Mii avatars. The customizable Nintendo Mii, which represents the players, debuted with the Nintendo Wii console in November 2006.

Nintendo Miis are highly customizable and though their aesthetics are simple, they can represent a surprising variety of people. Users can tweak their character's face, head, height and build and are given a variety of hairstyles and facial features to choose from. Accessories like hats, bows, glasses and jewelry are also available for users to dress their Miis up with.

Miis represented in Miitomo are going to become more customizable than ever with the introduction of Splatoon accessories, hairstyles and wardrobes.

Splatoon is famous for its cartoon-like, third-person multiplayer paintball arena game. Up to eight players can join a single game of Splatoon where two teams of four compete to paint the other team with their colorful ink guns or brush-based weaponry. Players control characters called Inklings, which can transform between humanoid and squid forms.

Critics gave Splatoon positive reviews for its unique plot, quality animation and original soundtrack. The game debuted at No. 1 in Japan sales and No. 2 in the UK. Since its release in May 2015, Splatoon has sold more than 4 million copies worldwide.

Nintendo announced that it is bringing Splatoon to Miitomo starting April 27. The Splatoon items will not be available for purchase, but they can be unlocked by playing the pachinko-style game Mii Drop, or through retweeting #Miitomo_Splatoon_RT. Nintendo is urging users to not include a comment with the retweet in order for it to be properly counted to meet the milestones.

If the hashtag is retweeted for 10,000 times, the Inkling Boy wig will be unlocked. At 20,000 retweets, the Inkling Girl wig will be offered. Both items will be available for free for all users of Miitomo.

Through Mii Drop, lucky players can earn Splatoon-inspired clothes, shoes and other accessories. Additionally, other items such as Splatoon badges will be available through the Miitomo shop, and ink tanks will be available for purchase using My Nintendo Platinum points.

The promo runs from April 27 until May 29. The retweet period ends April 26 at 7:59 a.m. Pacific Time. Miitomo users can claim Splatoon promo items until May 29.
