With the new Doom set to arrive in a few short weeks, Bethesda is shining some light on the game's single-player mode, including a cool Easter egg in each level out of which old-school Doom players will get a kick.

In each of the game's single-player stages, eagle-eyed players can find a hidden lever. Pull it, and a secret door will open somewhere in the stage, a door that will transport gamers back in time to that of the original Doom.

Gamers still use their newfangled weaponry, but the environment and even the music will all be taken straight from the Doom that started it all. The enemies players encounter in these Doom 1 areas will sport their new looks from the reboot, though they will spawn in the same locations as they did back in the original. Once unlocked, players can play the full versions of the classic levels from the main menu.

It's a cool nod to longtime fans of the franchise and is becoming a bit of a trend for Bethesda's shooters as of late. The Id Software-developed Rage included a "Doom Room" where players could play through the classic game, and the Wolftenstein: The Old Blood spin-off for Wolfenstein: The New Order also included rooms where players could blast their way through the original Wolfenstein 3D.

Doom is a franchise with a lot of history behind it. It's the granddaddy of the FPS genre, the shooter that created more than a few gamers back in the day. With that in mind, it's cool to see Id Software paying tribute to both the original game and longtime fans alike.

You can check out the Easter egg in all its gory glory below.

Some of the original minds behind the first Doom are currently seeking funding on Kickstarter for a brand new FPS that looks to recapture the speed and lethality of shooters from the early '90s. If you're looking to check out some of the older entries in the Doom franchise before the release of the reboot, it's not as easy as it would seem. With so many ports and re-releases for the games over the years, finding exactly what you want can be a little confusing. Thankfully, our extensive guide will help. Happy demon hunting!
