A few short years ago, most gamers believed that the idea of cross-platform play across Microsoft and Sony's consoles was impossible.

Now, though, cross-platform play is a very real thing, especially with more people in the gaming industry throwing their support behind it.

The latest support comes from CD Projekt Red (The Witcher) CEO Marcin Iwinski, who recently spoke up about how his company believes in allowing for cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 platforms.

The statement comes after Microsoft decided to support developers wanting to create games with cross-platform multiplayer capabilities. The company established a new policy for Xbox Live that will allow Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gamers to participate in online games together.

"First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we're enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," ID@Xbox director Chris Charla said at the Game Developers Conference. "This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks - including other console and PC networks."

Charla pointed out that game developers have a choice in whether to use this feature or not, but it does open up multiplayer gameplay for the two consoles. The first cross-network game is Rocket League, as confirmed by Charla.

Since the announcement, game developers have come out in favor of the idea, believing that it will allow multiplayer gameplay on both consoles unlike before.

"It's not the battle of who can make a better ghetto any more, but who is better for the gamer," Iwinski said. "That's what we're after. It's about opening up and competing on who has the better offer."

However, Microsoft's biggest competitor in the console market, Sony, has remained more dodgy when asked about its support for cross-platform play. Though the company doesn't give specifics about how cross-playing with other networks would work on the PlayStation 4, it does seem that it's in favor of the idea.

"PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002," a Sony representative told GameSpot. "We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross-platform play."
