For years, the standard in online gaming was Xbox Live, and Microsoft's service was the clear front-runner for how gamers played online. With the Playstation 3, Sony decided to test its hand at a similar service and created its own program: Playstation Plus. Half online gaming, half rewards program, Playstation Plus was something completely new for console players, and with the launch of the Playstation 4, the service has continued to expand.

Now, Sony is giving players a free preview of Playstation Plus during the weekend of Sep. 26-28. During this time, multiplayer access is open to all gamers with a Playstation Network account.

In a post on the Playstation Blog, Sony announced that online multiplayer is free to anyone with a Playstation 4 and an internet connection. There's no prerequisites for signing up, and no credit card or purchases are required. In Sony's own words, "Simply log on during those times, fire up a game and enjoy playing with your pals."

This isn't the first time a trial like this has been held; Microsoft has offered similar deals with its own Xbox Live program.

It should be noted that this is only for online multiplayer gaming, and playing during the free trial does not grant access to any of the other PS Plus features. For members, online multiplayer is really only the tip of the iceberg. Sony regularly holds PS Plus exclusive sales, and members are eligible for free games every month. Unfortunately, Sony has stated that these features won't be available to those participating in the free trial.

The timing of this free trial is no coincidence, either. The Playstation 4 has had some major multiplayer releases lately, including games like Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition and Destiny. With Destiny setting multiple sales and streaming records, it makes sense that Sony would want to try and convince those who haven't yet paid for the service to finally make the jump after playing a few free rounds of the Crucible.

Thankfully, Sony isn't looking to keep anxious gamers waiting: the Playstation Plus trial begins this Friday, Sep. 26 at 12am PST until 11:59pm on Sep. 28.
