Microsoft's Skype real-time translation tool, aptly called Skype Translator, has just expanded its scope and can now cover calls made to mobile phones and landlines.

Skype Translation first hit the scene a couple of years ago, but it was only available for Skype-to-Skype calls when it rolled out in 2014. Microsoft added a slew of upgrades and Skype Translator has come a long way since its initial debut, eventually rolling out to all Windows users earlier this year.

Microsoft also integrated the real-time translation tool into its Skype for Windows desktop app this year, and the company is now expanding the Skype Translator availability even further.

With the latest update, Skype Translator is no longer limited to just Skype-to-Skype calls. It can also handle phone calls made to landlines and mobile phones using the same artificial intelligence techniques it has been using.

Skype Translator On Mobile And Landlines: Here's The Catch

If you're wondering what's the catch, here's the deal: to take advantage of real-time translation for calls to mobile phones and landlines, users need to be part of the Windows Insider Program and get the latest Skype Preview beta for the app. Last but not least, users also need paid Skype credits or a subscription to test the feature.

"We love bringing people together, and so today, we're excited to announce the next milestone for Skype Translator: voice translation for calls to mobiles and landlines on Skype Preview," Microsoft touts. "You can now use Skype to call people on their phones and communicate across languages, even if they do not have Skype."

How It Works

The real-time translation tool will work with calls to mobiles and landlines just as it does with Skype calls. Upon bringing up the dialer pad and entering a phone number, you'll see a "Translate" option that will allow you to set the language you want.

When the person you're calling picks up, they'll hear a message informing them that the call is being recorded and translated. From there on, Skype Translator will work its magic and translate the conversation, with short delays for the system to do the translation.

Skype Translator Supported Languages

Skype's translation tool can currently handle nine spoken languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Chinese (Mandarin), Portuguese (Brazilian), Arabic, and Russian.

Microsoft points out that wearing a headset substantially improves the experience when using Skype Translator. At the same time, the real-time translation tool is constantly learning and improving, so the more it's used, the better it translates.
