If you have been eyeing the photography-centric Kodak Ektra smartphone since it was announced in October 2016, you are in for some good news. The company has confirmed that the handset will be hitting the United States and Canadian shelves in a few months from now.

The U.S. and Canada release of the handset was announced by Eastman Kodak Company and Bullitt Group at the CES 2017.

The Kodak Ektra is already available in Europe since December 2016 and in April, the handset can be purchased by consumers in the U.S. and Canada.

"We have been overwhelmed with the success of the EKTRA Smartphone launch across Europe and are delighted to be bringing it to the Consumer Electronics show and showcase its imaging capabilities ahead of our imminent U.S. market launch." stated Peter Stephens, CEO Bullitt Group.

The Kodak Ektra sports a 5-inch full HD display with a 1080p resolution. A deca-core Media Tek Helio X20 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz powers the smartphone. It also boasts 3 GB of RAM.  The Kodak Ektra comes with 32 GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card.

The Kodak Ektra is equipped with a 21-megapixel rear-facing camera with a f/2.0 aperture, PDAF(phase detection auto focus) and dual LED flash. It also touts the Extensive Scene Mode Selection and packs in the Horizontal Two Step Shutter Release functionality. The smartphone has a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with a f/2.2 aperture and PDAF as well.

The smartphone also packs in a Super 8 app that aids users in adding professional touches to the smartphone. This functionality reminds one of Kodak's "iconic Super 8 motion picture film stocks."

Since photography is the Kodak Ektra's unique selling point, consumers looking to purchase this handset would be pleased with the fact that it has a robust camera setup.

It runs on the Android 6.0 Marshmallow operating system. The Kodak smartphone — the second Android-based handset from the company — has a 3,000mAh battery.

The smartphone is compatible with GSM networks, which means that consumers in the United States who are on network operators such as AT&T and T-Mobile would be able to use the device seamlessly. The company asserts that the Kodak Ektra has been optimized for superior performance on GSM networks.

The Kodak Ektra will retail for $549 in the United States. For those wondering if the preorders for the handset will open up anytime soon, you need to exercise some patience! The Kodak Ektra is slated to go up for preorder in both Canada and the United States in April. Consumers will be able to place their order for the smartphone at the time via Kodak's online store.
