Kodak's photographic-centric smartphone — Ektra — will hit the shelves soon.

Kodak announced the Ektra in October this year, which is targeted at customers who have passion for photography. Kodak's Ektra will allow users to take exceptional photos on the go.

"Kodak has a rich history in imaging technology and the launch of the KODAK Smartphone today demonstrates our ongoing commitment to bringing the latest advances in photography to consumers. The original KODAK EKTRA Camera was launched in 1941 and in its latest reincarnation, opens up a world of creative opportunities to all who care about photography," said Jeff Clarke, CEO of Kodak.

Ektra Specs

The Ektra features a 5-inch screen capable of 1080p resolution. Under the hood are a deca-core Helio X20 processor clocked at 2.3 GHz and 3 GB of RAM. The handset includes 32 GB of internal storage, which can be expanded further with a microSD card.

A 3,000 mAh battery fuels the Ektra. The phone comes with USB Type-C port and it is capable of fast charging.

The main focus of the Ektra is to attract customers looking for a smartphone with great camera capabilities, which means that Kodak should deploy a brilliant camera in the phone.

The Ektra is equipped with a 21-megapixel fast-focus rear-facing camera with PDAF, optical image stabilization, F/2.0 aperture and dual LED flash. All these features promise excellent photo quality to users.

The Ektra is expected to offer enhanced photography experience to users as it includes an intuitive touchscreen DSLR Dial (with haptic touch), customizable manual mode (with adjustable shutter speed and ISO rating), horizontal two-step shutter release and extensive scene mode selection. The primary camera of the Ektra is also capable of capturing 4K videos.

Taking selfies from a mobile phone and sharing on social media is a fast growing trend. To ensure that the Ektra delivers high-quality selfies, Kodak has equipped the phone with a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with F/2.2 aperture.

The steel-rimmed lens and textured finish give the Ektra a premium feel.

"From its classic Kodak styling and intuitive design, to the choice of heritage leather accessories, let your smartphone say something about who you are," says Kodak.

The Ektra will come running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. However, customers will hope that the company will release the latest Android 7.0 Nougat, which brings a number of new features to the table, as soon as possible.

Price And Availability

The Ektra has a price tag of 499 euros ($530) in Europe. Kodak has confirmed that the device will be initially released on Dec. 9 in Germany followed by other regions soon.

A previous Tech Times report noted that the company has not officially revealed plans of releasing the Ektra in the U.S. market. However, Kodak representatives would keep an eye on the demand of the smartphone in the country and adjust their strategy accordingly.
