The good news is that Google has put the upcoming Nexus 6 smartphone up for preorder at the Google Play Store. The bad news is that the smartphone is already sold out.

Users avidly waiting for the Nexus 6 to be put up for preorders saw what massive demand for a product could do for its sales.

Most users clicking on their browser's Refresh button to be among the first to preorder the smartphone might have seen the "Coming Soon" tag on the Nexus 6 page instantly become "Out of Stock."

There were some reports of users who said they were able to purchase the device, but these reports were not at all plentiful. Did Google earmark only a few units for its initial release, eclipsed by the very high demand for it?

One of the more obvious explanations for the occurrence is that there were just so many users waiting for the product to be put up for sale on the Google Play Store. A massive wave of purchases must have gone through as users flocked to the page all at the same time.

However, a report released by MobileSyrup adds a bit more detail to the explanation of the suddenly sold-out Nexus 6.

According to the report, most of the Nexus 6 units are reserved to be sold through carriers, which means that only a fraction of the total number of Nexus 6 smartphones were planned to be offered for direct sales to users.

All five major carriers in the United States, namely AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and U.S. Cellular, have lined up to sell the Nexus 6 under their respective programs, which could mean that the bulk of the initial release of the Nexus 6 will be done through these companies.

Also according to MobileSyrup's report, this move to release most of the Nexus 6 units through carriers coincides with Google's intention to implement a near "carrier-only" plan for the smartphone.

Users that are still hopeful that they can preorder a Nexus 6 smartphone without having to do so through a carrier can still continue to monitor the Google Play Store listing for the device, as there could be more units that Google will release for direct sales to users.

If that does not happen, then users will most likely only be able to purchase the Nexus 6 through one of the carrier companies.
