A man from Florida allegedly stole a 2016 Maserati GranTurismo in the course of a test drive. He only managed to drive for around 2 miles before he was caught and arrested by police.

The suspected culprit has been identified as Michael McGilvary, 45 years old and a resident of Boca Raton. The heist happened last Feb. 21.

Maserati Test Drive Ruse

Police report indicated that McGilvary showed up at a Fort Lauderdale showroom. He was allowed to test drive the Maserati GranTurismo after leaving his driver's license.

Naturally, he was accompanied by one of the dealership's sales staff. McGilvary allegedly fooled the hapless employee by driving to the Boca Raton Resort and Club, where the suspect claimed his girlfriend was staying.

After some sales pitching of his own, the suspect successfully prodded the salesman to leave the car at 501 E. Camino Real so they can both check a boat that McGilvary claimed belongs to his father.

The boat was nowhere to be found, so the suspect excused himself to get his supposed girlfriend instead. The salesman was left stewing for around 30 minutes before he began suspecting that something nefarious was afoot. He called the facility's valet, who then informed him that a Maserati has left the parking lot 20 minutes ago.

McGilvary was promptly arrested by the police after a report was lodged. Interestingly, there is no word yet if the Maserati has been recovered. Based on reports as of this writing, the suspect is already in federal custody and that he still refuses to acknowledge not only the theft but also the fact that he was in the dealership in the first place.

Maserati touts that it is one of the most stylish coupe of all time and is created for those who wants to live life to the fullest with uncompromising driving enjoyment. The company's sales pitch underscores how every feature is a masterpiece by way of its Italian design and engineering credentials.

"Inspired by the Maserati Birdcage 75th concept car, the GranTurismo is a magnificent example of gorgeous styling and brilliant engineering," Maserati said. "From its sublime silhouette, styled by leading Italian design house, Pininfarina, to the immense power of its engine, this four-seater sports car offers thrills and exhilaration for everyone on board."

Its convertible variant is also notable for being one of the most fuel efficient.

The Maserati GranTurismo has a base price of $150,570.
