WARNING: The following article may contain spoilers for Deadpool 2.

Reviews for Deadpool 2 are now coming in, and it looks like the sequel to 2016's record-breaking R-Rated Marvel superhero adaptation is reaping mostly positive reviews, much like its predecessor.

Expectations for the sequel were high considering the first Deadpool film was a box office knockout, earning $783 million globally and winning the hearts of critics and audiences alike thanks to its clever spins on the typical superhero movie formula. Now, several critics say Deadpool 2 surpasses the first outing in terms of upending the tropes associated with the genre and mixing sharp comedy with fast-paced action. Some are more critical of the film, however, pointing out what they believe to be ethnic stereotypes among supporting characters.

No matter how divided the critics may be on Deadpool 2, it's hard to argue against the fact that the film is a highly refreshing take on the persistent superhero movie formula. It doesn't attempt to revamp the tired old techniques that make superhero films bombastic, dynamic, and spectacle-filled experiences but uses those and pokes fun at them afterward, aware that these old tropes are trite and overused — but that they work.

Overall, however, Deadpool 2 is sitting well with reviewers. The film comes out May 18. Check out some excerpts from reviews below:

Deadpool 2 Review Roundup

The Hollywood Reporter: "There's action aplenty throughout the film, but Deadpool 2 doesn't bog down in it as many overcooked comic-book sequels do. With Reynolds' charismatic irreverence at its core, the pic moves from bloody mayhem to lewd comedy and back fluidly, occasionally even making room to go warm and mushy."

ScreenGeek: "On the whole, Deadpool 2 is a great follow up to its hit predecessor, filled to the rafters with great gags, awesome action scenes, some spectacular cameos and at times some genuinely heartfelt performances from the film's cast. Deadpool 2 is the ideal romp to counteract the more somber feelings you may have received from watching Avengers: Infinity War."

The Verge: "Deadpool proved that audiences were hungry for a superhero as self-aware as they are; Deadpool 2 proves that character can actually ground an ensemble. With filmmaker Drew Goddard (The Martian, Cabin in the Woods) tackling an X-Force movie next, there's going to be an entirely new playground for Deadpool's snarky schtick and silliness — and it's likely going to be there for many years to come."

The Village Voice: "Here's what you need to know: This is less Deadpool 2 than Deadpool Squared, a studio and its star (Reynolds is credited as co-writer) committing to hyper-violent self-referential comic-book buffoonery."

Vanity Fair: "There's no other way to put this: Deadpool 2 is a regular, shmegular superhero movie, distinguished only by an obnoxiously unearned dose of "see what I did there?!" It's a drag."

The Atlantic: "The movie that unfolds from this premise is at least as funny as the original Deadpool, and better in virtually every other respect: better plot, better villains, a few unexpected narrative swerves, and, yes, at least one genuinely moving sequence."
