Google has been acquiring a number of companies lately. The search engine giant's latest acquisition is security startup Impermium. The startup will be helping Google to boost its already considerable expertise in countering Web abuse and Web spam within the company's products.

Impermium is a company that focuses on controlling abuse and spam on the Internet. CEO and co-founder Mark Risher said that the Google acquisition will improve Impermium's ability to do the things it does best.

"When we founded Impermium three years ago, our mission was to help rid the web of spam, fraud, and abuse. As sites gain in popularity, criminals and miscreants are never far behind, and Impermium has worked hard to defend some of the largest and fastest-growing sites," Risher said. "By joining Google, our team will merge with some of the best abuse fighters in the world. With our combined talents we'll be able to further our mission and help make the Internet a safer place. We're excited about the possibilities."

Google is a company that is already good at what Impermium specializes in, so it looks as if Google acquired this startup to tap the small pool of smart engineers instead of the product itself. Furthermore, what Impermium does could serve Google+ in a big way since the platform will require a watchdog to watch over spam and user abuse as the social network continues to grow in the future.

"Google's spam and abuse teams are industry-leading and world-class. Impermium should fit right in," said Bradley Horowitz, Google+ vice president of product.

Impermium is the latest company to be bought by Google in recent months. Earlier this month, Google acquired Nest for $3.2 billion, a deal that would Google to gain a foothold in the smart home market segment.
