Consumers may very well see the words "chocolate" and "3D printing" in the same aisle when they head over to a supermarket in the near future. Hershey and 3D Systems have announced that they would be working together on a new project involving 3D printed chocolates and sweets.

The Hershey Company is on one of the largest manufacturers of chocolate and candy products in the world, while 3D Systems Corporation is a forerunner in the nascent 3D printing industry. So when these two companies decided to enter into a multi-year agreement, expect them to whip up a delicious treat.

"We believe that innovation is key to delivering relevant, compelling consumer experiences with our iconic brands," says Hersey Chief R&D Officer and Vice President William Papa. "Whether it's creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats in to the future."

3D printing using candy or chocolate isn't exactly a new idea. Back in 2011, a researcher from MIT created a machine that could create the likeness of a human face using chocolate. At CES 2014, 3S Systems also showcased a 3D printer called Chef Jet that could create edible, sugary candies. However, the experience and innovation that the Hershey Company will bring to the table will undoubtedly satisfy even the most discerning sweet tooth. 3D Systems Corp has also expressed that it is looking forward to working with Hershey in the upcoming project.

3D printing has been around for a while now and the technology has only started to mature in recent years. As evidenced by the strong showing that top 3D printing companies made at the CES 2014 in Las Vega, the technology is here to stay.
