Dark Sky, the weather app Apple acquired from Adam Grossman in 2020, is finally closing its curtains to the users soon.

The Cupertino firm says its support for the iOS app will officially end on Dec. 31. Meanwhile, the Dark Sky API will no longer be available on March 31, 2023.

The Dark Sky weather app has alerted iOS users that it will no longer be accessible by January 1, 2023.

Your favorite weather forecasting app on iOS is bidding goodbye soon, according to a report by Macrumors.

Apple has confirmed that this will take effect by the end of the year. The announcement came after the iPhone maker announced the arrival of the iOS 16 to its built-in weather app.

Previously, the tech giant said that it would now move forward with anything associated with Dark Sky, including its app, API, and website.

The original plan was to shut down the weather app at the end of 2021. However, Apple has to leverage the updates for the app, which was why the imminent shutdown was postponed this time.

At the same time, the company was focused on bringing new features to WeatherKit API.

"Support for the Dark Sky app will end on January 1st, 2023. Dark Sky's forecast technology is now enhanced and integrated into the updated Apple Weather app," the notification alert reads on iOS.

New Weather App Features

Once you click "More Info," you will see that the listing on the App Store shows some fresh features that recently arrived in the Weather app.

According to 9to5Mac, here's what you will see when the message pops out:

  • Severe weather notifications: Get a notification when a severe weather alert has been issued near you.
  • More weather details: Tap any module in the Weather app to reveal a new, deeper set of data, such as hourly temperature and precipitation over the next 10 days.

Other Substitute Apps to Dark Sky

Since Dark Sky is nearing its closure in just a few months, you might want to explore using the WeatherKit API. Of course, this app is also a paid option, but it's much more affordable than the previous weather apps in the iOS market.

In other news, The Verge reported that the Carrot 5.8 update would bring new sections and lock screen widgets to iOS 16.

For those who are not familiar with this app, Carrot Weather establishes a unique branding because of its humorous approach when it comes to weather features.

It should be noted that not all features will be available to all users. To utilize some of them, you can pay for the Premium Club, which comes at an annual charge of $19.99 or $4.99 per month.

The weather app is not only accessible and downloadable for iOS users. Android users can also use this app. They can install it from the Google Play Store.
