Adobe has released Lightroom 2022 and one of its most notable new features is the simplification of selective editing and removal of unwanted subjects.

Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, and Adobe Camera RAW all support the main features, which include a masking function powered by artificial intelligence (AI) and content-aware removal.

AI-Driven Masking

Adobe added AI-powered masking to Lightroom last year, making it an alternative to Photoshop for making minor adjustments or erasing unwanted elements. Now it goes further by adding capabilities that let you quickly and simply choose people, objects, and the backdrop with a single click.

"Select People"

One of the updates is called Select People, and it makes use of Adobe's AI Sensei to pick out people, groups, and even particular bodily parts, like the skin of the face or body, the eyes, the teeth, the lips, and the hair.

It is very easy to use. With a picture loaded onto the platform, Adobe's AI automatically detects and names each individual in a scenario as "All People," "Person 1," "Person 2," "Person 3," etc. Then, if you pick Person 2, you'll be able to customize their appearance down to the granular level of their face, skin, body skin, teeth, and so on. You will be able to make adjustments to the colors and sharpness, too.

"Select Objects"

On the other hand, the Select Objects tool makes this process simpler in a few different ways. You may easily choose an object, such as a rose, by simply painting over it with the brush or drawing a rectangle around it.

The AI will then automatically improve the boundaries of the mask to make it more accurate. Similarly, you no longer have to invert a subject selection to pick the backdrop of a complete picture; instead, you may just select the background with a single click.

Content-Aware Healing

If you would rather get rid of the subjects altogether, aka "healing," the Content-Aware Remove option makes that a breeze. Simply create a mask around the area you want to delete, and the AI will seamlessly integrate it into the backdrop, depending on what it sees. You may refine your controls by selecting the sampled region and using the Refresh feature.

Just like every other tool of its sort, the Content-Aware Renive option works well with certain visuals and fails miserably with others. When dealing with complicated backdrops that are difficult for AI to differentiate from the foreground, the masks may also need to be manually adjusted. Even yet, in certain situations, it offers you a head start and, often, selects the complete subject perfectly on its first attempt.

Additional New Features

Along with the improved GPU performance, the desktop version of Lightroom now has a "compare while editing" function, which loads two photos simultaneously so that you can better match them. You may now quickly load photos from your mobile device and switch between the left and right panels in Lightroom Classic for Windows only.

As a part of Adobe Camera Raw, masking curves and HDR support for displays are included, although the latter is still in a technical preview.
