BERLIN, GERMANY - OCTOBER 05: A Billboard advertisements for YouTube hang on a wall on October 5, 2018 in Berlin, Germany. YouTube has established itself as the biggest global platform for online video presentations.

Price Hike for YouTube Premium: Family

From its original monthly plan of $17.99, Youtube Premium will add $5 to its Family tier as it hikes its price. According to The Verge, the Family Plan offers its users ad-free viewing, background playback, and access to YouTube Music and can accommodate five separate Google accounts for five people.

Now that the tier costs $22.99, new subscribers will not be able to sign up with its previous price. As per the report, the newly hiked price will be taking place on the current subscribers' next cycling bill starting on or after November 21st. Adding to this is that if a user subscribed through the Apple App Store, $29.99 will be the price for this plan.

For other regions, its previous and current prices are indicated below:

  • United States: $17.99 - $22.99
  • Canada: CA$17.99 - CA$22.99
  • United Kingdom: £17.99 - £19.99
  • Argentina: ARS 179 - ARS 699
  • Japan: ¥1,780 - ¥2,280

Despite the price hike for its Family Tier, YouTube will not be raising the cost of individual accounts as it currently still costs $11.99 per month based on the company's website with the exception of both Argentina (from ARS 119 to ARS 389) and Turkey (from 16.99 TRY to 29.99 TRY).

Aside from the YouTube Premium price hike for Family Tier, YouTube also increased its monthly plan for YouTube Red Family. From its original price of $14.99, it now costs like the Premium Family plan with a $22.99 price hike.

Reason Behind the Increase

9To5Google reported that Google noted that customers will be notified at least 30 days ahead before the price changes. An email was also sent to its subscribers and it states, "We created YouTube Premium to provide an uninterrupted YouTube experience, so you can get closer to the videos, creators, and music artists that you love. To continue delivering great service and features, we will be increasing your Premium family plan price."

No explanation was given by the company regarding the increase of its price for Family Tier but this seems to be a major shift from YouTube as there are no price hikes since 2018. Although it was very timely as it comes days after the announcement of YouTube that they have concluded their trials for the availability of 4K streaming exclusively to YouTube Premium subscribers

Several reports stated that this decision of Google was met with a lot of negative criticisms as non-subscribers were dissatisfied when they were asked to pay an additional of $12 per month or $120 per year just to stream a 4K content, which is originally free to access.

No confirmations from YouTube if the decision is only temporary.
