Netflix's ad-supported Basic plan ditches support for older iPhone, Android mobile devices, and Chromecast. Apple TV folks are also getting left behind by the cheaper-priced plan.

But how about Amazon Fire streaming devices?

Netflix Ads Tier

As per the latest news story by Tech Crunch, Netflix has started rolling out its ad-supported tier, aptly named Basic with Ads, to various parts of the world.

Initially, the new cheaper plan debuted in Mexico and Canada. It allowed folks based in these countries to get their hands on the ads plan earlier than the rest of the world.

But two days after its launch, the ad-supported tier reached other territories, such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Brazil. The giant streaming service also expanded to Germany, France, Australia, Italy, and the home of Squid Game, Korea.

And as such, the new Basic with Ads plan is now available in a dozen countries.

Does Basic with Ads Support Older iPhones, Android Devices, and Chromecast?

Given that, it leaves out other territories across the globe. Not to mention that the new cheaper Netflix tier leaves out millions of older iPhone, Android, and Chromecast users.

According to a recent report by XDA Developers, the new plan that comes with ads fails to support older phones and streaming devices.

The news outlet notes in its report that iPhone users clinging to older versions of iOS will have to get at least iOS 15. So if you are an iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 owner, you would miss out on the new ad-supported tier.

Meanwhile, Android phone users still running older than Android 7 software would be left out as well. The ad tier only supports version 7 and later, leaving out older mobile devices.

And on top of mobile devices, the new cheaper tier also leaves out older Chromecast streaming devices.

It turns out that if your Chromecast fails to feature Google TV, the new Basic with Ads plan will not work. It skips support to the first, second, and third-generation Google streaming device.

How About Apple TV, or Amazon Fire?

XDA Developers also noted that all Apple TV users completely miss out on the new ads tier of the giant streamer.

On the other hand, all of the streaming devices of Amazon offer the new Netflix plan. The same could be said for smart TVs, Macs, and PCs.
