SANTA MONICA, CA - SEPTEMBER 22: A Tesla vehicle is plugged into a Tesla charging station in a parking lot on September 22, 2022 in Santa Monica, California. Tesla is recalling over 1 million vehicles in the U.S. because the windows can pinch a persons fingers while being rolled up.

Telsa's Charging Connector

In a blog post made by Tesla, the company opens a new possibility for other automakers to adopt their technology and make it a new standard for the whole of North America. Tesla shares its specification files on their website for their EV charging connector design which is currently available to download.

This offers all Tesla vehicles AC charging and up to 1 MW DC charging. As per TechCrunch's report, the compact design and its performance are considered in the market as superior among other Combined Charging System connectors in North America.

North American Charging Standard

Adding to this, the company also claims that the charging ports and connectors that the company has been providing since then, are the most common charging standard in the continent, calling it the North American Charging Standard (NACS). The claims were based on Tesla's sales of its vehicles and the current count of chargers in several Supercharging stations. As of the moment, the company has 1,500 Supercharger stations in the United States alone, which contains nine chargers per station.

"We invite charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to put the Tesla charging connector and charge port," Tesla stated. They added, "NACS is the most common charging standard in North America: NACS vehicles outnumber CCS two-to-one, and Tesla's Supercharging network has 60% more NACS posts than all the CCS-equipped networks combined."

As of the moment, only one company has been very supportive of this move of Tesla. EV Startup Aptera request the government of the United States this year to adopt the Supercharger technology of Tesla as the standard for all electric vehicles in the country. However, the report added that it is hard for other companies like GM, Ford, and Stellantis, to switch to Tesla's technology as the most automaker is now using the CCS, as per Electrek

The blog post added that several plans have already been started by network operators as they incorporate NACS at their chargers. This would allow Tesla owners to charge to other network providers like ChargePoint, EVConnect, and Electrify, without using an adapter.

It will also be a win-win situation for Tesla and Non-Tesla owners as if several automakers switch to NACS for their electric vehicles, all EV owners will have access to the company's North American Supercharging and other charging networks across the continent.
