The Samsung Galaxy S23 128GB base model will use the UFS 3.1 chip, which is a downgrade to Samsung's newer UFS 4.0 standard. This is an older model that offers a slower storage solution than its other tiers.

BERLIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 01: A wall of Samsung Galaxy Z Flip4 mobile phones is seen during a press preview at the IFA (Internationale Funkausstellung) 2022 consumer electronics trade fair on September 01, 2022 in Berlin, Germany. IFA, running at its normal capacity for the first time in three years after a hiatus due to lockdowns amidst the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, is open to the public from September 2-6.

Slower Storage Solution

Samsung is scheduled to announce its newest flagship phone this upcoming February 1st for the first in-person Galaxy Unpacked event in the last three years. The Galaxy S23 series is expected to launch for this event, and leaks were already revealed by different tech publications online.

While the newest series offer more promising specs, Android Police reported that Samsung will be using the UFS 3.1 chip for S23 base models. The older storage option offers a slower storage solution than the UFS 4.0 standard of the company.

Known Samsung leaker Ice Universe stated that the reason for this downgrade is that the company does not produce a UFS 4.0 chip specifically for 128GB models. Consumers will have to pay extra fees to acquire the 256GB that offers the more advanced storage option.

Samsung claims that the new chips are twice as faster as the older memory since it offers sequential read and write speeds of up to 4,200MB/s and 2,800MB/s. The latest NAND storage also give 46% more power efficiency that will keep users' battery life longer and stronger than the previous ones.

Adding to this, a 1TB option will be offered through the UFS 4.0, while Samsung's UFS 3.1 only offers 512GB as its largest tier. Through these upgrades, it will bring the device a noticeable uplift in its system performance with a heavy load.

Other Leaks

While the leaks of Ice Universe are not definitive, this might still be true but can eventually result in a different approach. Based on a report from Engadget, several leaks were also claiming the S23 models will start with 256GB, cutting the 128GB out of the line.

Through this, there will be no "downgrades" from the latest series of the newest Galaxy S23, as it will all offer the UFS 4.0 chips. Others claim that this might be also the reason why Samsung offers a free storage upgrade for consumers who pre-ordered the Galaxy S23.

Other leakers also suggest the latest S23 Ultra will be offering Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Generation 2 chips, which is the known successor of the previous Snapdragon 9 Generation 1. This will center an all-in-one chip to power the device's processes, leading to better cameras.

Galaxy Unpacked 2023

The first in-person event of Samsung for the past three years will happen in a few days. Galaxy Unpacked is set to take place on February 1st at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, which will also stream on Samsung's official website and YouTube channel.

Aside from the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung might also launch its newest tiers of Galaxy Book laptops. However, Samsung did not release any confirmations regarding what they will announce at the said event.
