Beware Mac users, as new ransomware was recently discovered by researchers and it centers on powerful access to Apple computers that could steal and loot one's data. It does not stop there, as security researchers have regarded that this came from the notorious ransomware group called LockBit, known for being one of the most dangerous in the world.

While there are myths in the tech industry that Mac is unhackable, several events in the past have debunked it already, and it is as open to threat actors like Windows and Linux. 

Mac is Now the Target of the LockBit Ransomware Gang

The MalwareHunterTeam has regarded that the latest attack on the Mac is the first targeting build from the LockBit ransomware gang, and this was recently discovered by the team in their latest findings. While the attack was not yet massive in terms of affected Mac users, this is still definitely a massive threat to look out for in the public's use. 

This attack was first regarded by Brett Callow and shared across his following on Twitter, with the threat analyst from Emsisoft showing concern for the macOS users. 

LockBit's arrival on the Mac is regarded as the first time that it created new access that goes against Apple users, with their systems not safe for ransomware of this caliber.

Beware of the new Mac Ransomware from LockBit

While the details are not that informative regarding this new attack, it is important to note that ransomware may be accidentally installed when clicking links, opening websites, or installing software and allowing access from unverified sources. 

The new Mac ransomware from LockBit already sounds dangerous as it is, and what more if it already penetrated one's system and used the information as leverage against users to extort money from them. 

Mac is Open to Threats as Much as Other OS

Mac is a renowned computer platform in the industry, and for a long time, the company did not have any problems with threats and viruses because of its high-security standards to protect its operating system. However, it has proven to be a wall that can be taken down, with several breaches, malware, and zero-day attacks already surfacing in the past.

Whether it be via users opening links from untrusted or unverified sources which appear to be legitimate or threat actors targeting a specific user, no one is safe in the digital world that we live in. 

There was also one vulnerability discovered, and this is through the piracy of Final Cut Pro software which may deliver a bootleg copy of the video editing suite but hides malware that accesses systems unknowingly. 

In August 2022, LockBit has accounted for almost 40 percent of the ransomware and attacks in cyberspace, with a global reach on its capabilities to access systems. With the recent discovery, LockBit not only proves that Mac is an OS that it can breach but also deliver dangerous ransomware that can loot one's data and use it against users for extortion.
