As of writing, numerous non-profit organizations and companies are already making efforts to encourage people to change their habits for the good of the environment.

Most of these movements focus on proper waste disposal, as well as conventional car replacements.

However, numerous people across the globe are not aware that even online streaming can affect the environment.

Dom Robinson created the Greening of Streaming movement as he was concerned about the negative environmental effects of streaming platforms.

Cambridge Digital Innovation explained that streaming could drastically impact the environment. This is because of the data transmission and energy consumption of streaming devices.

Numerous studies claimed that the streaming industry is responsible for over 3% of the global carbon footprint.

This is because streaming lies on massive infrastructure centers, devices (such as TVs, smartphones, and computers), as well as networks.

How To Get Involved and Why You Should

Based on the latest statistics, over 230 million users access Netflix this 2023.

If you are a heavy Netflix user, then you should definitely get involved in the Greening of Streaming movement. One way to do this is by donating to the Greening of Streaming organization.

For those asking if they can become a member, this is not a great option since the org's memberships are focused more on companies and other organizations as they cost thousands of dollars.

Aside from donating, the Greening of Streaming movement also encourages individuals to contribute their ideas to the LESS Accord.

Of course, the most known way to lessen the effects of streaming is by reducing your screen time. But, if you have other ideas on how to reduce streaming's impact on the environment, you can submit your ideas to the LESS Accord by clicking here

In other news, Earth.org recently urged the tech industry to take climate action.

Meanwhile, ByteDance removed TikTok's climate change denial videos as part of its Earth Day 2023.
