Tesla Conducting Final Winter Tests of Cybertruck in New Zealand

Tesla's Cybertruck is perhaps the most anticipated electric vehicle program to launch this year. As the production nears for the Cybertruck, a video was shared online revealing that the company sent a prototype to New Zealand, most likely for the final winter testing of the electric pickup truck.

According to Electrek, the vehicle is pretty easy to recognize despite being covered because of its futuristic angular body.

It might confuse some people why it is called a "winter test." But when it is summer in the northern hemisphere, engineers of Tesla follow the snow to New Zealand to continue their vehicle development. The automotive and energy company has already used the Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds (SHPG) in New Zealand for winter testing in the past. The facility reportedly offers winter testing for automotive and tire manufacturers from June to September.

Videos and photos of the vehicle during the tests would likely be kept from being leaked in the coming weeks. Thus, the Cybertruck was covered while being unloaded from an aircraft.

Aside from its strict industry guidelines and world-leading snow and ice facilities, SHPG focuses on the confidentiality of its clients, as highlighted on the facility's website.

Cybertruck is one of Tesla's most anticipated electric vehicles in the market, which is set to be launched later year. Based on the company's latest official comment on the timeline, the vehicle's planned launch might arrive at the end of the third quarter, which means it may come at the end of September.

Previous Winter Tests of Tesla

Tesla had already conducted a winter test for its Cybertruck last May in its own extreme-cold testing facility in Alaska near Delta Junction.

According to Auto Evolution, the facility's engineers have vast snow and ice surfaces to test the car in all conditions, including on iced hills with various gradients and a huge skidpad.

If Tesla wants to conduct a winter test for their vehicles, the Alaskan facility is the place to go. Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy recently invited Tesla CEO Elon Musk to consider utilizing the state's resources to build the company's upcoming premium vehicles lineup.

Cybertruck was specifically mentioned in his offer. Dunleavy tweeted that Alaska stands above other areas when it comes to balancing resource development.

"Nobody in the world balances resource development and environmental stewardship better than us," the governor wrote.

Last December, Tesla featured SHPG on YouTube as both companies worked on the Model Y's Track Mode feature. Teslarati reported that the video also featured Tesla's existing lineup of vehicles in the video, such as the Model S sedan and Model X SUV.
