Meta's Threads, the fast-growing social media app, is making waves in the tech world as a potential rival to Elon Musk's Twitter.

After amassing a staggering 10 million users in just seven hours and 100 million within its first five days, PhoneArena tells us that Threads is now poised to introduce a highly anticipated feature: Direct Messaging (DMs).

Leaked Memo Hints Threads DMs Coming Soon

A leaked internal memo obtained by Business Insider sheds light on this development, indicating that DMs will be "coming soon" to Threads and other exciting features.

This news is a pleasant surprise for Threads users who had previously been informed that DMs were not on the immediate roadmap.

The leaked internal memo from Meta, the parent company of Threads, provides valuable insights into the upcoming features and enhancements for the platform.

While a paywall, unfortunately, blocked the specifics, social media analyst Matt Navarra took to Twitter to share that the memo mentions several new capabilities that will be introduced on Threads.

One of the most anticipated additions is the inclusion of DMs, which will enable subscribers to communicate privately within the Threads ecosystem. This feature will eliminate the need for users to switch to another social media app to engage in private conversations, making Threads a more comprehensive and user-friendly platform.

Increased Pressure on Twitter

Threads' decision to expedite the rollout of DMs can be attributed to influential Threads creators who successfully advocated for its prioritization.

By launching this sought-after feature ahead of schedule, Threads aims to establish itself as a viable alternative to Twitter, putting pressure on Elon Musk and his team to attract more advertisers and boost Twitter's cash flow.

Additional Features

According to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, Threads has an array of exciting features planned for the future.

In addition to DMs, users can look forward to improved search functionality, trends, and topics. Multiple account support, a chronological feed showcasing content from people you know, and the ability to edit posts are also on the horizon.

Furthermore, Threads intends to incorporate support for hashtags, catering to the interests and preferences of its diverse user base.

Monetization and User Requests

As Threads gains momentum and secures its position in the market, Instagram envisions monetizing the platform by introducing ads. This move is expected to drive revenue for Meta and further establish Threads as a formidable player in the social media landscape.

Additionally, users have expressed their desire to be able to delete their Threads accounts without affecting their Instagram accounts. While this request is yet to be fulfilled, it highlights the importance of flexibility and user control for social media platforms.
