Meta's newly launched text-based app, Threads, has taken the digital world by storm, amassing an astonishing 10 million new users within a mere seven hours, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Unlike its Twitter rival Bluesky, which still relies on invite codes, Threads has achieved global availability excluding Europe in record time, reported first by Engadget.

Facebook owner Meta's new Threads app, meant to compete with Twitter, was available for pre-order on mobile app stores on iPhone and Android operating systems on July 5, 2023. Listed as "Threads, an Instagram app," the new program should be available in the coming days, and is described on Apple's app store as "Instagram's text-based conversation app."

10 Million Signups in 7 Hours

To commemorate this momentous achievement, Zuckerberg broke his decade-long Twitter silence and tweeted a classic Spider-Man standoff picture, accompanied by the announcement of "10 million signups in seven hours" on the Threads platform.

Threads, under the purview of Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, represents Meta's formidable challenge to Twitter and other alternatives like Mastodon. Their intention is to integrate Threads with ActivityPub, the source protocol powering Mastodon and other decentralized services collectively known as the "Fediverse."

Threads enjoys a close association with Instagram, sharing the same platform, which provides Meta with a strategic advantage in promoting the new app. Users who pre-ordered Threads on iOS received push notifications upon its release, further bolstering the impressive influx of signups.

Meta's decision to release Threads ahead of schedule turned out to be a fortuitous move, allowing eager users to experience its offerings sooner than anticipated. Threads emerges as a timely alternative, offering a platform that combines textual and media content, reminiscent of Instagram's aesthetic.

Available for Download

Threads is now available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play, eagerly embraced by users seeking an alternative digital experience. The unexpected early release has garnered appreciation from users.

Already, Thread posts have gained significant traction, with content creators making their mark on the Meta platform. Users are drawn to the opportunity Threads presents for a new form of digital expression and connection.

Unlike Twitter, Thread posts can be accessed through external links found online. However, users must exercise caution, as not all links may be trustworthy.

Some may lead to clickbait or phishing attempts. An amusing meme has already emerged, symbolizing the metaphorical demise of Twitter while celebrating Threads as the preferred platform for the digital community.

With its explosive growth and unique features, Threads may just signal a new era in social media competition but this time will still tell if it achieves long-term success.

Meta's ability to rapidly attract millions of users underscores its dominance in the digital landscape and positions Threads as a formidable contender in the realm of text-based platforms.
