Android Auto, the popular in-car infotainment system, has rolled out a new update to enhance road safety. With version 11.4, users will now find certain apps restricted while driving, marked by a small "P" icon (via SmartDroid).

This feature aims to discourage distracted driving and promote safer habits behind the wheel.

According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report, distraction contributed to 8% of fatal crashes, 14% of injury crashes, and 13% of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic incidents in 2021. Additionally, these crashes resulted in 3,522 deaths and an estimated 362,415 injuries.

Android Auto introduces version 11.4, enhancing road safety by restricting apps while driving, summarizing texts, suggesting replies, and promoting hands-free communication to minimize distractions.

Locking Car Apps While Driving

Previously, users attempting to access stationary-only apps while in motion would encounter error messages. Now, with the introduction of the "P" icon, it becomes clearer which apps are off-limits while driving. Gaming and video streaming apps such as GameSnacks are among those affected by this restriction.

In addition to app restrictions, Android Auto now offers the ability to summarize long text messages using AI, making it easier for users to stay informed while driving. Messages exceeding 40 words will be paraphrased, while shorter ones will be read in their entirety. This feature aims to minimize distractions and promote safer communication practices on the road.

Furthermore, Android Auto now suggests relevant replies and actions, allowing users to respond to messages and calls without touching their phones. This hands-free functionality is designed to enhance convenience while driving and reduce the temptation to engage with devices while on the road.

Testing or messaging is not particularly dangerous, but it can be deadly when done while driving. According to the NHTSA, driving 55 mph while sending or reading a text message for five seconds is equivalent to driving the length of a football field with your eyes closed.

Take Note

While these new features represent significant improvements to the Android Auto experience, users should be aware that message summaries may differ slightly from the original text.

It is recommended to review the original message if accuracy is paramount. Additionally, users have the option to disable message summarization and reading aloud in the settings menu.

By restricting app access and offering hands-free communication features, Android Auto aims to minimize distractions and prioritize safety on the road. As the update continues to roll out to users, Android Auto users need to familiarize themselves with these new features and make use of them to enhance their driving experience.
